Cleveland Clinic’s Marwick heads back Down Under
Thomas H. Marwick, MBBS, PhD, MPH, a staff cardiologist and cardiovascular imaging section head at the Cleveland Clinic, will take over the position of director of the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania at the University of Tasmania, Australia. The move will allow him to return to his homeland.

Marwick specializes in cardiac imaging in heart failure and coronary disease and in the detection of early stages of cardiac dysfunction. His other clinical interests include the cardiac complications of cancer and cancer treatment, valvular heart disease and advanced coronary disease. He is particularly interested in appropriate and cost-effective application of cardiac imaging techniques for treatment selection and monitoring.

In an interview with Cardiovascular Business, Marwick said he would be returning to family in Australia. He added that he hoped to arrange an appointment with the Cleveland Clinic to continue his ongoing research, but he acknowledged the distance was challenging. “The time zones are pretty much opposite,” he said.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Melbourne, Australia, a PhD at the University of Louvain, Belgium, and an MPH degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. He served a residency in medicine at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, followed by a cardiology fellowship there and at the Hallstrom Institute of Cardiology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He completed Australian Board-certification in medicine and cardiology in 1988.

He joined the Cleveland Clinic in 1988 as an advanced fellow in cardiac imaging and was named to the associate staff in the department of heart and hypertension research. He left in 1991 to accept a visiting professorship in the department of cardiology at the Universite Catholique de Louvain in Brussels, Belgium. He subsequently spent a year as a senior lecturer in cardiology at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London before returning to Cleveland Clinic in 1993.

From 1993 to 1998, he served as director of cardiac stress imaging and clinical director of echocardiography in the cardiology department. He left Cleveland Clinic to return to Australia to accept a position as Princess Alexandra Hospital and as a professor of medicine at the University of Queensland. He returned to Cleveland in 2009.
