The CNSC welcomes new CSA standards for the Nuclear Industry

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) welcomes the work of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in the development of nuclear industry standards.
“The CSA’s work on nuclear standards are an important component of nuclear safety in Canada,” said CNSC President Michael Binder. “These standards include provisions to protect workers and public health and safety, to protect the environment, and to maintain national security and measures required to implement international obligations to which Canada has agreed.”
Standards set out the necessary elements for acceptable design and performance at a regulated facility or activity, and are one of the tools used by the CNSC to demonstrate that licensees are qualified to carry out licensed activities.
New nuclear standards recently published by CSA include:
•N286-12, Management System Requirements for Nuclear Facilities
This Standard identifies management system requirements and integrates the requirements from management system standards for health, safety, environment, security, economics, and quality. It applies to the lifecycle of the nuclear facility from the initial conception through completion of decommissioning. The scope of this new edition expands beyond nuclear power plants to include nuclear facilities and uranium mines and mills licensed by the CNSC.
•N285.0-12/N285.6 Series-12, General requirements for pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants/Material Standards for reactor components for CANDU nuclear power plants
This Standard specifies the technical requirements for the design, procurement, fabrication, installation, modification, repair, replacement, testing, examination, and inspection of, and other work related to, pressure-retaining and containment systems, components, and supports over the service life of a CANDU nuclear power plant. Changes include clarification of process, piping and design systems rules.
•N288.6-12, Environmental Risk Assessment for Nuclear Facilities
This Standard provides guidance on designing, implementing, and managing Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) for Class I nuclear facilities and uranium mines and mills. It employs a systematic process that helps identify, quantify, and characterize environmental risks posed by contaminants on biological receptors.
•N289.4-12, Testing procedures for seismic qualification of nuclear power plant structures, systems, and components
This Standard defines the processes and requirements for performing seismic qualification by testing and presents the different test methods that may be used for the seismic qualification of nuclear power plant structures, systems, and components.
•N289.5-12, Seismic instrumentation requirements for nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities
This Standard provides a basis for specifying requirements for seismic instrumentation. The recorded data of seismic activity will be used to compare actual and predicted responses, and to assess the need for further detailed inspections.
The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; and to respect Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
