Hip AP, Unilateral Frogleg & Lat (Explanation of lateral)

The following should be clearly shown:

_ Evidence of proper collimation

_ Hip joint centered to the radiograph

_ Hip joint, acetabulum, and femoral head

_ Femoral neck overlapped by the greater trochanter in the Lauenstein method

_ With cephalic angulation in the Hickey method, the femoral neck free of superimposition

(Frank et al. Merrill’s Atlas of Radiographic Positioning and Procedures: 3-Volume Set, 12th Edition. Mosby, 022011. pp. vol1-349 – vol1-350).

Lateral Hip

•Patient position

–Rotate slightly toward affected side to an oblique position

•Part position

–Center affected hip to midline of grid

–Flex affected knee and draw thigh to almost right angle to hip

–Body of femur parallel to table

–Support opposite hip and knee


–Perpendicular through hip

–Enters midway between ASIS and pubic symphysis

•Collimated field

–Size of IR
